Campaign for the Future

There is a sign carved in wood outside the Lodge at Four Winds*Westward Ho that reads, “This camp is built to music, therefore built forever.” It could just as easily say that “this camp is built to poetry, or adventure, or for the child who discovers that the world is full of infinite possibilities, therefore built forever.”

Three generations of campers at this camp hidden away on Orcas Island in Washington state have wondered why the songs, the poetry, the adventure and the friendships they made have stayed with them all of their lives. Perhaps they will never know. But what they do know, and what we know, is that this camp is a rare and wonderful place that we must preserve and treasure for future generations.

That is why the Board of Trustees launched Campaign for the Future in 2005, in order to raise capital, endowment and annual fund money.

Ruth A. Brown, Founder

Much has been accomplished since this campaign began in 2005. All of the capital projects have been completed or will be completed during the next year or two.  The new Craft Courts and Health House are fantastic pieces of craftsmanship and work both functionally and aesthetically. Mountain Thyme and the Print Shop serve camp’s needs much better and are very attractive as well. And, once the new water system is built, camp will have the water it needs each summer for daily operations. Support for the Financial Aid endowments, including the Pegasus Fund and Friends of FW*WH Fund, reaffirm the commitment alumni have towards including campers from all walks of the life in the camp family each summer.

Campaign for the Future concluded in December 2009, with a grand total of $2,449,708 raised in capital, endowment and annual fund money.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the campaign, which helped ensure that Four Winds *Westward Ho will continue to be a very special experience for generations of children to come.
