S.D. Bechtel Jr. Foundations gives $150,000 for new infirmary

Four Winds * Westward Ho is pleased to announce that it has received a $150,000 grant from the S. D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation to fund the conversion of Lower Mountain Thyme into the infirmary.

Throughout the summer the infirmary is a busy place with approximately 75% of campers requiring daily medication. The existing infirmary, Health House, is not big enough for this volume of daily traffic in and out of the building. It was constructed in the early 70’s when the camper population was half of the current size. The medical needs of youth have changed dramatically over the past three decades and the board feels it is essential to provide an infirmary that can meet these needs.

The renovation of Lower Mountain Thyme will include the following:

  • A bedroom for the nurse
  • Two bathrooms
  • Two separate “sick” rooms to house by gender or level of illness. Each room will accommodate eight campers
  • An enlarged reception area for small emergencies, distribution of medications, and lots of hugs. Included here is an office area with computer access and files for record keeping
  • A laundry room
  • A kitchenette area

We are very excited about this improvement to camp facilities and are honored that the S.J. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation felt this project was worthy of their support. Two generations of Bechtel family members have attended Four Winds * Westward Ho over the years.

Funding for Campaign for the Future has now reached $1.27M or 40% of our goal.
