Overview - Introduction & Background

Four Winds * Westward Ho Camp is looking for college-age and older staff to work with children, help in the kitchen, assist in managing the camp program and lead trips this summer.

Camp Four Winds Westward Ho, located on Orcas Island 100 miles north of Seattle, can be reached by auto ferry or seaplane. Orcas Island is 50 square miles of wooded hills and green pastures in a rural setting. Campers and staff come from many different states and foreign countries, with a large number coming from the West coast. 170 campers attend each of our 2 four-week sessions and are looked after by a staff of 100.

Four Winds * Westward Ho was founded in 1927 to help children discover a sense of independence, gain respect for the beauty of nature, and develop the ability to live with others in a group setting. Traditions from early on are still part of camp today: uniforms, sailing and long associations with big sailing boats, trips among the islands, folkdances and evenings of sharing music and poetry in the Lodge. Campers participate in activities such as sailing, horseback riding, soccer, tennis, archery, ultimate frisbee, pottery, drama, photography, woodcarving, canoeing, kayaking, fishing and gardening.

The ideal staff member is a person who works well with children, is a positive role model, has skills in our program areas and has a good sense of humor. To work effectively in the camp environment, one must be mature, self-reliant, have good judgment and a strong sense of safety, possess first aid and CPR certification, work well in a community living situation and have an abundance of energy.
